is it SAD?

"Feeling more like Sherlock Holmes, minus the meerschaum pipe or the hunting cap, Systems Analysis and Design (SAD)  allows us think outside the box. It allows our imagination to wander, limited and grounded with hard facts."

Common misconceptions of people, including us, regarding SAD is that it is a boring and tiresome activity, having to juggle all facts and come up with a solution to a problem- thinking that with all the problems one have to face, why would we waste our time with such activity? But through the activity we had, presenting the case of the ABC Church, it led us to discovering and appreciating more what is SAD and how it may help us.

When asked about whether Systems Analysis and Design is fun, we first want to define what is fun for us. Fun, for us, may be in a form of an activity or thing that at the end of the day, leave a smile on our faces. This smile pertains to that feeling of satisfaction or that feeling of delighted-ness we get from the activity or the thing. And in fact, SAD left a smile on our faces not because we felt satisfied with its concept but because it gave us a new meaning for what fun could be. Feeling more like Sherlock Holmes, minus the meerschaum pipe or the hunting cap, Systems Analysis and Design (SAD)  allows us think outside the box. It allows our imagination to wander, limited and grounded with hard facts. It opened us to a new perspective that there is fun in a challenging activity, that feeling that you really get into the situation that you don't want to give up unless you were able to solve it and when you were able to find solutions, you are still eager to be more creative in presenting the solutions-these were some of our thoughts after the activity.
Like anything else, one cannot savor or find fun without having to face and overcome challenges. The challenge in SAD is providing the developers with a clear description of the services their customer needs and the specification of what the system needs to do to meet the requirements of end users. In addition, its process is also a challenge. One must be a keen observant to be able to clearly point out the problem. Second, it requires deeper analysis and this also entails a deeper analytical skill. Lastly, one must come up with the best solution to be able to fully develop the desired development. More than the process, there are other underlying challenges like how can the whole SAD, starting from identifying problem down to coming up with the best solution, be communicated to the end users. As a systems analyst, one must possess good communication skills because at the end of the day, it would definitely relay down to its end users/ clients. If one communicates like alien, ignoring the comprehension of an average client, who does not talk SAD, then all its efforts will just be out to waste.

One can learn while having fun and it is always nice to integrate fun with problems we face. Because of the activity, we were able to realize that regardless of how challenging an activity might seem, if we are optimistic about it and we have that drive to finish what we've started, then, we'll surely harvest the fruits of our hard work.

Pirates of the Silicon Valley

Steve Jobs (Noah Wyle) and Bill Gates (Anthony Michael Hall)

" Good artists copy, great artists steal." - Steve Jobs

1. What is the story all about?
A tech-world biopic film that traces the fortunes of personal computer companies Apple and Microsoft from their ambiguous dorm-room and backyard origin to their public battle for corporate supremacy. The movie is a dramatized story of the early professional lives of Steve Jobs and Bill Gates, two men who made the technology world what it is today. It somehow discloses their struggles and efforts especially during their college years, as well as the skills they have that accompanied them to where they are right now.

2. What are your realizations/insights/morals?

  • Persevere
The key to accomplishing all our hopes and dreams is to have and keep that fighting spirit in our hearts. We learned from the movie that anything is possible when one is determined to start and finish a plan. Through perseverance, we are able to apply and test our capabilities, to know its limits and learn from it. Moreover, even if struggles and difficulties will come into play, we must always remember that perseverance would be the only thing that would keep us moving, moving forward.

  • Imagine
Imagination is far more important than knowledge because without the former, one cannot attain the latter. Imagination allows our minds to keep working out. It opens the different possibilities in this complex world and at the end of day, might lead to great discoveries just like what the lead actors had in the film. Never stop imagining :)

  • Appreciate
Because of the movie, we were able to appreciate more what we have. We think that it is just right to pay tribute to these two men who introduced the amazing technology we all benefit from now. Second, the film made us realized that we need to appreciate each individual's talents and differences though the movie depicted it in the opposite way- stealing other people's concepts. Third, it also made us realized that at the end of the day, despite all the success that we might achieve, we will all go back to what we were before, a friend, a father, a social being that has responsibility to its co-human. Appreciate the things and most especially the people around us for we might not know when will they be taken away from us.

3. What will be the world of technology be without this story?

The world of technology would be a mess or maybe a world that we least expect. Without this story, we guessed that no one would take the initiative to make the world what it is now, or if there was, it wouldn't be as brilliant or as successful as what Steve Jobs and Bill Gates contributed. The story triggered our minds that through imagination, talent, and some wise thinking, we all gonna achieve all our dreams and somehow contribute to the society. In the end, what their story is would definitely serve as our inspiration to aspire and achieve greater heights.
